Last week,
there was the furore caused by David Cameron because he said Nigeria and Afghanistan
are “fantastically” corrupt.
Abeg, let us not blame him o, he was just
repeating what he previously heard. Meanwhile, why are we so sanctimonious in pointing the finger? Hmm, the question is who is
corrupt and who is not?
According to Transparency International, Corruption is
the abuse of entrusted power for private gain. It can be classified as grand,
petty and political, depending on the amounts of money lost and the sector
where it occurs. So, with this definition who is corrupt? Naija is
corrupt o agreed because, we have all witnessed it at one point or the other
and also our political leaders do not hesitate to say so. But some western
individuals/countries do thrive from the said "corrupt countries"
with western countries being a safe haven for laundered money. In addition, some
developed countries are also corrupt just that the information does not trickle
down rapidly as opposed to that of the developing countries.
We should not
feel insulted by Cameron’s words, rather we should see this as a challenge to ensure
more transparent and accountable methods to eschew corruption from our country.
So my people
who is corrupt?
You ask who is corrupt? Nigeria is. Fantastically so too, as we have been called. Isn't it sad that we have been lumped into such great company; a country recovering from war Afghanistan? What we need is a benevolent dictator who will not look back and cleanse this country of all the corruption in both politics, public service and civil society.
ReplyDeleteboth the person that stole an the receiver are both corrupt... kettle calling pot black. Buhari rightfully said that he doesn't need an apology. All he needs is the return of stolen goods tucked away in their country.
ReplyDeleteI agree Nigeria is corrupt but "they" usually dont succeed in the looting alone; they always need assistance which they always get from western countries... Always. The support of Westerners is readily availabe as they are keen to cash in on the dividends of these corrupt acts. As long as they do this, they are the pillars of corruption for it is clear they are working hand to hand with Nigerians to perpetrate this act.

ReplyDeleteCorruption in Nigeria is cultural & institutionalised, which is the highest level of corruption. Not many countries have such deep level corrupt culture and it is about time we get called out for such shameful culture. It is unbelievable that we are still so shortsighted & backward in the 21st Century.
ReplyDeleteLolllzzzz.... The taker and the giver plus the collector are all corrupt. E.g the man who wants a contract by all means and bribes the secretary, boss and all involved to get d bid and win d job is d Giver. The taker is the Secretary, Manager, Boss and all the people involved in the deal. In some cases the taker can be the Asker. The Asker is d one insisting on 'egunje' 'dropin' 'fine me sumtin' 'grease d palm' if not ur file go miss o. Lolllzzzz..... Whereas the Collector is usually the safe haven or final bus stop of ill gotten cash such as the Banks and foreign countries who welcome with open arms apparently looted funds. E.g dede Camy and Mama Charliee and Co. They help d fantastically web of Korruption(in hausa tongue) grow.dey use it to develop their economies and will turn d oda way wen asked about dem. Hmmmmm........ If u ask me na who i go ask??? Politicians abi Civil servants? Or d hustler on d street?? Oya man Davo cast d first stone. Lolllllzzzz .... Bt on a serious note Corruption is Fantastically destructive!!!!!!! It begins with all of us. We all should clear our conscience and do the right thing. Govt alone cannot fight it.cos ryt under d nose pf d govt dem peeps are stealing and doing all sorts.e.g Budget padding e.t.c. WRONG can never become RIGHT even if everyone is doing it. Wrong will always be Wrong!!!
