Please my people is skinny the new black?
I understand that
in order not die young from certain factors including obesity, we have to
maintain a certain body mass. But body shaming people cruelly who are
struggling to lose weight, have health issues that makes them gain weight or
who are just happy being themselves is a no no. We all can’t be the same size,
shape or height.
Many celebrities and non-celebrities alike have been trolled
on social media because of their body weight. Both men and women have been
criticised but I am going to focus on the women. International celebrities like
Tyra Banks, Mindy Kaling, Iggy Azalea, Kim Kardishian,
Rebel Wilson, Demi Lovato and Adele have all been criticised about their
weights. Naija celebrities including Uche Jombo, Ini Edo, Eniola Badmus,
Omotola Ekeinde, Waje and Halima Abubakar have equally been criticised.
Let us take for example, the cases of Abena and Prince, a Ghanaian couple that has been trending on social
media and Jessica Portelli. Prince says, he loves everything about Abena
including her size and she in turn loves the way she looks. Jessica took to her
Facebook to reply a stranger, who said she should not be wearing a bikini with
these words “I'm happy with my biiigggg tummy
with tiger stripes but you could have said the same thing to the girl who
finally got out there and had the courage to wear a bikini and you just killed
her confidence with one stupid comment.”
This weight thing, has made some to think
they need to be a certain way to be deemed beautiful and many have resorted to
different pills, teas and exercise routines in order not to be labelled “fat”. If
person adds weight, problem, if person lose weight, problem, abeg which one we
dey so? We all should be careful with our words, because words do hurt and encouraging
words will definitely go a long way. We
should lose weight if it feels right especially if health concerns are involved
and not because of societal pressures.
Meanwhile, why is there so much pressure on the appearance/image
of women? Why should there be societal ideas on what “beauty” is? And why
should we be judged on how we look? All these have led to the constant
filtering of images on-line so as to fit the “norm”. Let us all learn to love ourselves in whatever shape or form we are in
and the only thing that should really matter is being healthy. Please share
your views.
If people don't criticise others then the world will be one boring place. Lol. Back to the main point, it's hard for some people to come out and be proud with the way they look without thinking what others think about them. Self confidence is very important and that's one education that should be given. But we're all humans and capable of being affected by what others think.
ReplyDeleteHey Naija Girl I agree with your thought and view on this. Men should not decide what women should look like. In the same vein, other women should stop supporting TV shows (Keeping up with the Kardashians, love & hiphop and America's next top model) that basically paints a typical stereotype to society what a woman should look like. We (men & women) can stop this mess if we are serious. #Rantover
ReplyDeleteDis culture of thinness has driven so many ladies into eating disorders like bulima nervosa.wat matters is d beauty inside.one mans food na d oda mans poison.
ReplyDeleteWho cares if she is provided or skinny what matters na good character
ReplyDeleteHumans generally seek for acceptance in different ways.thats why lotsa folks will do tins to conform to generally accepted views. But been different is what makes us interesting. Like say Baba God bin wan make all babes dey like popeye and all men dey like Johnny bravo e go dey dry na. Oluwa imself like variety na im make im no create all man d same.its usually interesting when you go out and you see different faces, shapes and colors some darker or lighter odas a blend of both. Truly humans are unique and like the bible says we are 'fearfully and wonderfully made'. We are not made to suit ourselves bt d creator. In summary self confidence is very important. So we can blossom and manifest our uniqueness. I Love me no be boasting na my own way of expression. Don't wana be no kim k or dem gurls. Like me d way i am as long as i am comfortable. Atleast i go fit move my bum without too much struggle. Lolllzzzz
