Global Terrorism

Terrorism according to the Oxford dictionary is the unlawful use of  violence and intimidation especially against civilians in the pursuit of political aims.
But unfortunately, it is no longer solely in pursuit of political aims but also in pursuit of different ideologies both religion and other wise.

Worldwide we are witnessing various magnitudes of terrorism in Africa, Middle East, Europe and Asia. These acts of terrorism are inextricably linked from one country to another. John Horgan of the Pennsylvania state university has found that terrorism grows because of a whole range of reasons while include:

  • feeling of alienation
  • they readily identify with the group because they feel they suffer from social injustice
  • they believe action speaks louder than words
  • they see nothing wrong with violence
  • they join because they have friends, family or relatives sympathetic to the group.
  • they believe in joining offers some sort of reward;financial, spiritual etc.
Understanding terrorism, what drives it and conditions that it thrives in is quite complex and hence, there are different continuous theoretical and empirical research to further understand it. I believe terrorism is linked to the search for an identity and the most popular form of identity is religion This is because the search for identity has further paved the way in which religion is understood and practised.. Worldwide, religion provides a basis for identity and commitment hence, making it a defined form of recognition. So, here goes my questionAre these conflicts based solely on religion or are there other underlining reasons?

  1. I think terrorism in some ways is fueled by poverty, a sense of isolation, a need to belong to something bigger than oneself, and perhaps the biggest one; crime. Did you notice that quite a lot of those involved in recent times were all petty criminals with multiple convictions already?

  2. Yes I agree it is poverty driven and also politics of identity that is usually portrayed in most of our societies

  3. It is more a tussle of supremacy between religions and countries that leads to some taking up arms to show supremacy.
