Music Evolution

computerworld.com

I received a question from a blog visitor asking, “Has the change in music over the years/past two generations been for better or worse”?

I would say some genres of music have been better with time while some are WORSE. I grew up in the era, when one gets inspired from listening to great music and penning awesome love letters either culled from the song or invoked by the song lol. Now I can’t really say it exacts the same emotion.

Music has become stereotypical and some of my Naija music are not left out. If the song does not start with one awkward stereotype beats or unrecognisable vocal sound, then my people music never start o.

Has music changed for the better or worse?

  1. Hands down the answer is WORSE!! As an avid RnB fan from a young age i have literally seen the genre die and i am grieved. My response comes out of my love for this artfirm lol therefore i can say that Im no longer moved deep within me, no longer do i feel as if the singer is feeling what i feel and singing on my behalf! Sex, one night stands and all things superficial seems to be the order of the day. I feel for this current generation who through the music, no longer desire to woo eachother and take their time, but just like fast food and high speed internet have taken the same approach.
Even the rap/hiphopgenre. Heaven help us! There was once a story in the music, now all we hear is sex, drugs and money in that order smh

  2. Entertainment is trendy. Artists tend to give their audience what they enjoy otherwise . . .

  3. I think that every generation has it's great artists and not so great artists. For example, Diana Ross's music wasn't exactly earth shattering or soul deep, but because she is from a gone era, she enjoys the icon status due to the nostalgia factor. Same thing will be said of Beyonce in time to come. Right now, her music is mostly all about "drunk in love" and "7/11" which isn't exactly going to love you to tears or make you think.

But just as the previous generation had Felt Kuti and Marvin Gary, we equally have Kendrick Lamar and Brymo. We have Jazmine Sullivan, Anthony Hamilton and Musiq Soulchild.

If your music catalogue is all Taylor Swift, One Direction and the likes, you would think that music has gotten worse.

  4. I don't see it as change. I feel the music reflects the rea that one is in and what's currently trending. as such, you can't really say one era is greater than the other.
